At what age does the EYFS framework apply?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework applies from birth to age 5. This framework is designed to support the development, learning, and care of children in this critical early period of their lives. It sets out specific standards for learning, development, and care that all early years providers must meet to ensure that children are provided with a safe, nurturing, and enriching environment.

The EYFS reflects the understanding that the early years are fundamental for a child’s overall development. It emphasizes the importance of learning through play and provides guidelines for fostering children's growth in various areas, including physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development.

The other age ranges provided do not align with the EYFS framework's specific guidelines. For example, limiting the framework to just a part of early childhood, such as from birth to age 3, does not encompass the full spectrum of development that includes ages 3 to 5, which are equally critical. Similarly, age ranges starting from two or including up to ten years old extend beyond the established EYFS parameters, which specifically conclude at age 5.
